October is wedding month! At least, in our house it is. So many of our closest friends and family celebrate their marriage this month, it feels like we’ve always got a reason to party, never mind Thanksgiving and Halloween too!
For my sister-in-law and brother-in-law, their October 2009 wedding at Balzac’s Café in Toronto’s historic Distillery district was one of the most fun weddings I’ve ever been to. Also, the smallest! Melanie and Matthew are such a great couple – laid-back, unpretentious, funny, and just so easy to hang out with. So was their wedding! Continue reading “Balzac’s wedding!”
Our good friends (and neighbours!) Roman & Katherine got married at the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse, a historic old schoolhouse in downtown Toronto in 2010 . This vintage building was perfect for their non-traditional wedding: elegant, warm, cozy and beautiful, but by no means were they having a “schoolhouse theme wedding”. So to get in the vintage mood, I put my hair up in a bun, grabbed my wooden ruler, and channelled my inner-19th-century-school-marm… Continue reading “School house wedding”
In 2007, The Ukrainian Academy of Dance celebrated it’s 20th anniversary of ukrainian dance instruction in Toronto and published a limited-edition book to commemorate this historic event: In the Dancing Spirit… Celebrating 20 years of The Ukrainian Academy of Dance. Having been a dancer and office assistant at the Academy for many years, the school’s history was deeply intertwined with my own, and I was grateful to be a part of preserving this dynamic organization’s legacy. I was recently hired by St.Vladimir’s Institute to produce their quarterly newsletter, VISTI (News). St.Vladimir’s has been a student residence and ukrainian cultural centre in downtown Toronto since 1963 and offers a rich and diverse program of cultural events, including: language lessons, icon painting, lectures, art exhibits, a library and documentation centre, culinary lessons, etc… It seems there is always something going on at St.Vlad’s! The building is constantly buzzing with excitement, and VISTI keeps their loyal membership up to date about life and events at the Institute. Continue reading “St.Vlad’s news”
Hard to believe that my little guy is 5 and a half already. Yesterday was his half-birthday so I thought I’d reflect on the fun we had for his Pirate-themed birthday party in March. What 5-year old boy doesn’t want to dress up and pretend to be a pirate for a day? Heck, even 55-year old Uncle Matthew was excited to put on a pirate hat, although this tends to be a little too familiar for Uncle Matthew. But that’s another story… Continue reading “Symon’s Pirate Paaaarty”
Last Sunday, we celebrated the Bridal Shower of my good friend Larisa. I was deeply honoured that her sister (and Maid of Honour), asked me to create a unique invitation package for her special day.
Having known the bride for many years, I know her personal style is a bit more trendy and avant-garde and that a traditional, “girly” invitation would just not reflect her stylish ways. The invitation needed to reflect Larisa, be casual, yet pay homage to the formal venue – Toronto’s Old Mill – a beautiful, elegant and traditional setting.
