I’m very proud and excited to reveal the new logo for the Ukrainian Canadian Arts Network (UCAN)!!
UCAN is a committee of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC or “KYK”), formerly known as National Arts Council. This committee specifically strives to unite the Ukrainian arts community across Canada and create a network of artists of all genres to inspire creativity and innovation within the Ukrainian diaspora, as well as the multicultural tapestry of Canada.
Membership in UCAN is FREE and UCC encourages all Ukrainian Canadian artists – musical, visual, written, dance, theatrical, textural – whether they be solo or organized, to join UCAN so that we may continue to celebrate and inspire one other to propagate our arts and community.
INSPIRATION & DEVELOPMENT
Since UCAN represents a network of talented Ukrainian Canadian artists in many different mediums across Canada, it seemed fitting to create a logo reminiscent of a spark or “iskra” of energy and creativity that both ignites and unites us.
This logo was inspired by the drop-pull Lemko-style pysanka, which is created using a candle, a bit of wax, and a common straight pin. Lemko pysanka motifs are typically formed in circular patterns, and circular logos represent unity, cohesion and community; integrity, perfection and connection.
The “iskra” motif can be found in many genres of Ukrainian arts: on pysanky in the visual arts, as the sound hole of a bandura or kobza in music, in circular choreographic patterns found in dance such as the arkan, and geometric embroidery patterns found in traditional Ukrainian costumes and textiles.
